述而 第七篇  共三十七章

 

7.1:述而不作,信而好古,窃比于我老彭.

本章孔子自明有德无位,传说旧闻而已.

老师说:仅传说旧闻而不创作.对于古代的文物制度,笃信而且喜爱.私自比拟那商朝的老彭.

:传说旧闻; :创始义,如周公之制礼作乐; 信而好古:信于古而好之; 窃比:私自比拟也;

老彭:二说./包氏本戴记注老彭初人()贤大夫,/王弼注老是老聃(老子李耳)之大史,彭祖,帝贤臣.

Confucius said: Just to convey and not to innovate; Trust and fond of only the ancient Doctrines,I would in private level  myself with Lao Peng 

7.2:默而识之,学而不厌,诲人不倦,何有于我哉?

本章孔子以此三事自谦.

老师说:不言而存于心,努力学而不厌足,教人终不怠倦,这三事我那能全做到呢?

默而识之:谦逊博学; 何有于我?:那些会存于我?

Confucius said:To be quiet (modest) on one’s erudition,,never ever feel sick or tired of studying,teaching student without weariness; have I ever achieved any of them?

7.3:德之不修,学之不讲,闻义不能徙,不善不能改,是吾忧也.

本章说孔子忧修身要有日新之功,自警不达之心.

老师说:品德未加修养,学问不去讲习,听到义事不能迁徙而从之,已知道能改善的又不去改过来,这些都是我的忧惧啊!

:治义,修养也; :迁也,迁而从也;

Confucius said:unable to trim one’s conduct virtuously,unable to

advocate/practice what one has learnt,unable to change when told the correct way,, unable to rectify and improve for the best; these are things that worry me.

…These were things that cause Confucius’concern:…failure to cultivate virtue,failure to go deeply into what I have learned, inability to move up to what I have heard  to be right and inability to reform myself when I have defects.

7.4之燕居,申申如也,夭夭如也.

本章记孔子闻居气象.

老师在无事闲居的时候,容态舒畅,身心轻安.

燕居:闲居无事; 申申:容态舒畅; 夭夭:身心轻安.

When Confucius was at ease at home,he dressed up neatly, relaxing comfortably.

7.5:甚矣! 吾衰也.久矣!吾不复梦见周公.

本章孔子自叹衰老之象.

老师说:我已衰老了,很久了,我不再梦见周公啦!

梦见周公:周公旦,武王之弟.言不能行周公之道,亦不复梦见了.

周公:,周公旦,西周武王之弟.成王之叔.武王,成王,周公摄政而遭,,三叔忌之.作流言以撼公.周公避居东,作鸱鸮(chi-xiao鸱鸮痴嚣,似黄雀,小嘴尖如锥)之诗以贻王.王悟其非,故迎周公.三叔皆惧,殷裔武庾(yu,字本义露天的谷仓).周公东征,武庾,诛贬三叔,灭国五十,奠定东南.归而改定官制.创制礼法,之文物.因以大备,后复营洛邑为东都.召公奭(shi,字苯义盛大也)分陕而治.

Confucius said:Too much already! How feeble have I become! Its been so long since I could dream of Duke of Zhou again.

7.6:志于道,据于德,依于仁,游于艺.

本章说学者所学之事.

老师说:立志向道,据守着德,不违于仁,游习于艺.

:据守; :不违; :游习;

Confucius taught:Have an ambition to become virtue, stand firm on keeping a good conduct,bearing the principle of benevolent,enjoy the learning of the 6Arts.

7.7:自行束修以上,吾未尝无诲焉.

本章记孔子有教无类也.

老师说:凡是带着一点肉脯的见面礼来,我没有不给予教导启发的.

束修:一束十块肉脯.

Confucius said:Those who volunteer to come to learn and brought me a present of  bundle dried meat, I have not rejected teaching anyone!

7.8:不愤不启,不悱不发,举一隅不以三隅反,则不复也.

本章说诲人之法

老师说:心里不通而不想求通的,我不去启示他.不是在想说而说不出来的,我不去开导他,如举出一角,他不能推想到其它三角,就不再教导于他了.

:心求通而未得; :口欲言而未能; :一角;若物之方者,有四隅; 不复:不再教之也.

Confucius said:Those do not know and not anxious to know, I will not teach. Those do not speak out and express themselves, I do not enlight.  I point at a corner,if unable to infer from it the other three corners,I do not want to teach them again.  

…What Confucius demanded of his students was the willingness to learn:…I do not enlighten anyone who is not anxious to learn,nor encourage anyone who is not anxious to put his ideas into words.

7.9食于有丧者之侧,未尝饱也.于是日哭,则不歌.

本章记孔子吊丧能尽哀.

老师在有丧事人家一边吃饭,从不吃饱.

老师在这天吊丧哭了,便不歌唱.

When Confucius eats aside of a mourner, he would never eat a meal in full . Confucius would not sing in the same day should he had wept earlier.

7.10 颜渊:用之则行,舍之则藏,惟我与尔有是夫!…子路:子行三军,则谁与?…:暴虎冯河(ping粤读凭,义徒步过河),死而无诲者,吾不与也,必也临事而惧,好谋而成者也.

本章孔子赞美行藏有道,子路好勇而无谋.

老师对颜渊说:如被用于时,就行道于世,如被舍弃时,就藏道于身,只有我和你能这样的啦! …子路问:如果老师统领三军之事,将要谁一同去? …老师说:空手去搏虎,不用舟楫去渡河,死而不悔的人,我不和他一同.一定要能遇事谨戒小心,用计划去作决定的人,才和他一起去.

暴虎:徒手搏虎; 冯河:ping粤读凭,徒步涉水.

颜渊: 521-490.子渊.国人.孔子弟子(孔子十哲之一:子渊,子骞,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子贡,子路,子我,子游,子夏)..敏而好学.问一知十,孔子自认不如.不迁怒,不贰过,贫居陋巷,一箪食(dan;古时竹饭碗)一瓢饮(piao,剖开的葫芦以盛水),而不改其乐.孔子称其贤.早卒,后世尊为复圣.

子路:子路一字季路,,孔子弟子,孔子九岁, (孔子十哲之一:子渊,子骞,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子贡,子路,子我,子游,子夏).性鄙而好勇.事亲孝.大夫孔悝(kui悝粤),以为邑宰,出公在位,孔悝伯姬竖良夫谋立太子蒯瞶(kuai;gui瞶粤,瞶本字义眼昏如瞎,例句如聋如瞶)孔悝蒯瞶盟而劫出公.出公.子路,蒯瞶,请杀孔悝,此谓孔悝之难,子路遂被害.

Confucius spoke with Yan Yuan:‘Be active when talent is needed. Be reclusive  when they are not wanted.’only you and I can attain to that.

Zilu asked the master: If you were to command an army, Whom would you take with?

Confucius said:Those who would fight a tiger bare-handed or cross a river in barefoot,prepare to die without regrets, are all out of my list. I would take a man who is cautious in every respects  and could succeed due to his good strategy.

7.11:富而可求也,虽执鞭之士,吾亦为之;如不可求,从吾所好.

本章言富不强求,当知命乐道.

老师说:富若可求的话,就是执鞭的贱职,我也去做.如不可以强求,只有随我所喜爱的做了.

执鞭之士:,事也.操鞭贱职也.

Confucius said:If wealth could be obtained in a proper way, even though it was a groom cleaning low job,I would take it.If wealth could not be obtained in a proper way,then I would follow the like of my heart.(and to stay poorhappily) 

7.12之所慎:(),,.

本章记孔子所最谨慎之事.

老师最谨慎的有三事:斋戒,战争,疾病.

:如斋,祭前斋戒静心少虑;:作战,生死之争斗.

Confucius was very cautious on these matters

:Fasting rite, Warfare and diseases.

7.13 闻韶,三月不知肉味,:不图为乐之至于斯也!

本章记孔子陶醉于韶乐.

老师在齐国听到了,三月来不知道肉味.他说:我真想不到音乐感人会到这样的境地!

<<史记:孔子世家>>,516,孔子来到齐国,向主管音乐的太师学习.当他听了传说中的舞乐{},沉醉其中,竟然三个月吃肉也不察觉肉的味.

:时舞乐的章名.

When Confucius heard Shao (music) in Qi, for three months thereafter, he was unable to distinguish the taste of meat.

Confucius said: The music was so perfect which had gone beyond my expectation!

7.14 冉有:夫子为卫君乎? …子贡曰:!吾将问之. …入曰:伯夷 叔齐,何人也? …:古之贤人也. …:怨乎? …:求仁而得仁,又何怨? …出曰:夫子不为也.

本章明人对得失必以其道.

冉有:老师会赞助君么?…子贡:是啊!我将去问这事.进去了,问道:伯夷 叔齐是怎样的一种人呢?…老师说:古时的贤人啊!…子贡:他们(伯夷叔齐)让了位之后,心里会有怨恨吗?…老师说:他们(让位)为的求仁.而得到了仁,有什么怨恨呢?…子贡出来,:老师不会赞助君的.

伯夷:史有二人,本章指的是一/孤竹君 墨胎初之子,或作.其谥也(死后封号).其父将死,遗命立其弟叔齐.父卒,叔齐伯夷.伯夷:父命也;遂逃去.叔齐亦不肯立,继而逃.周武王,伯夷 叔齐叩马而谏,及灭得天下,夷齐兄弟二人耻食.隐于首阳山,采薇而食,遂饿死; /伯夷 虞舜时为秩宗(官名,主次秩尊卑),典三礼(天神,地祇,人鬼之仪),:有能典朕三礼,(众人)伯夷.

叔齐:孤竹君 墨胎初之子,,或作.公达.其谥也.父卒,与兄伯夷互让位而逃.

:,赞助义.君即卫出公;灵公逐其太子荆聩,灵公卒,人立荆聩之子.是为出公.人纳荆聩,人拒之.孔子.弟子不知孔子亦赞助,以子拒父之事.子路于此卫国政变{孔悝之难}中遇害.

冉有:522-489鲁人,字子有,(ran),亦称冉有又称有子,孔子弟子, (孔子十哲之一:子渊,子骞,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子贡,子路,子我,子游,子夏)有才艺,性谦退,季氏之宰. 参阅11.15

子贡:卫国人.(贡本作赣),姓端木名赐.孔子弟子, (孔子十哲之一:子渊,子骞,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子贡,子路,子我,子游,子夏).有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相卫,.尝说吴出师敌齐以存鲁.聘享诸侯.所至之国,其国君无不与之分庭抗礼.卒于齐.

Ran You asked:Do our master agree with Prince of Wei?

Zigong replied:Well,I shall ask him.

Zigong went in and asked: Boyi and shuqi,what were they?

Confucius said : Ancient sages were they!

Zigong asked: Did they feel chagrin? (abdicated their throne and stay reclusively for the rest of their lives)

Confucius said:They sought perfect virtue,and they got it.Why would they feel chagrin?

Zigong came out and said:Our master does not agree with Prince Wei, therefore will not assist him.(Prince of Wei abdicated his throne and usurped his son years later )

7.15 :饭疏食饮水,曲肱(gong雩读轰,义肩到肘的部位)而枕之,乐亦在其中矣,不义而富且贵,于我如浮云.

本章说安贫乐道之事.

老师说:吃粗糙的饭,喝白水,弯曲着手臂当枕头,心安理得乐趣也在其中.如果用不合道理的方法得到富贵,对我来说,好比天上浮云一般.

饭疏食:疏即粗饭也; 曲肱:弯着手臂

Confucius said: Eating simple food, drinking plain water,bending my arm as pillow to sleep on,I can find happiness in them already.Fame and fortune secured the crooked way, are to me as floading clouds.(disappearing soon)

7.16 :加我数年,五十以学易,可以无大过矣.

本章言读易经的重要.

老师说:假使再过几年,研读易经到五十岁,可以没有大的过失了.

:同假;

Confucius said:If add a few more years on me,as I reached my studying of the I-ching at my 50 years of age,I might be then free from making errors.

7.17 所雅言:,,执礼;皆雅言也.

本章述孔子用雅言诵诗执礼.

老师所说标准话的:诵诗,读书,执行礼事,都必用标准的正言.

雅言:又称正言.即标准话; 诗书执礼:言诵诗读书相礼之事.

The graceful language Confucius advocated to use (was considered to be the proper language).The Book of Poetry, The book of History, as well as practicing the ritual arts,they all used graceful language. 

7.18 叶公孔子子路,子路不对.:女奚不曰:其为人也,发愤忘食,乐以忘忧,不知老之将至云尔.

本章孔子自述好学乐道精神.

叶公子路孔子的为人.子路不知怎答.老师知了说:你为什么不这样地说:他的为人,好学发愤起来,连饭都忘了吃,乐于道而忘去一切忧愁烦恼.连自己已经要衰老也不知道,这么说罢了.

叶公:诸梁,子高.国大夫.食邑于.僭称[](越规自号).

子路:子路一字季路,,孔子弟子,孔子九岁, (孔子十哲之一:子渊,子骞,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子贡,子路,子我,子游,子夏).性鄙而好勇.事亲孝.大夫孔悝(kui悝粤),以为邑宰,出公在位,孔悝伯姬竖良夫谋立太子蒯瞶(kuai;gui瞶粤,瞶本字义眼昏如瞎,例句如聋如瞶)孔悝蒯瞶盟而劫出公.出公.子路,蒯瞶,请杀孔悝,此谓孔悝之难,子路遂被害.

The Duke of Ye asked Zilu about Confucius. Zilu did not reply him.

Confucius said:Why did you not say‘he is a man forgets to eat when ‘he is anxiously pursuing his studies;who is so happy that he forgets his sorrow; and he does not even old age is coming on soon ’…just quote that will do!

…An autobiography spoken by Confucius himself…Why did you not simply say something to this effect: he (Confucius) is the sort of man who forgets to eat when he engages himself in vigorous pursuit of learning, who is so full of joy that he forgets his worries,and who does not notice that old age is coming on?

7.19 :我非生而知之者,好古敏以求之者也.

本章孔子辟人误以为是生知.乃好学努力以得的.

老师说:我不是生下来就知道一切道理的.乃是我喜欢古代文物制度,努力勤求而来的.

:勉力勤行.

Confucius said: I am not born-intelligent.I am only fond of ancient culture and keen to excel myself on it.

7.20 不语:,,,.

本章述孔子以中道教人,不说奇异之事,无益于道.

老师不诲:怪异,强力,(bei粤读背,义违反),神教这些事情.

:怪幻奇异的事; :靠力大; :悖道而行之事; :迷信神灵之事.

Confucius would not talk about:Weirdness,Forcefulness,Anomaly or Superstition.

7.21 :三人行必有我师焉.择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之.

此章言学无常师.

老师说:三人同行,必有可当我老师的在其中.取他们善良的从而学之.看见他们当中有不良的,如我有相同的就改正过来.

三人行:亦可作为虚数,道途偶然所见之也.

Confucius said:When three of us are walking along, I am certain to find 2 teachers whom I can learn of among us. Select the good samples to follow and the bad to rectify if I were the same.

7.22:天生德于予,桓魋(tui退)其如予何?

本章明孔子仁者不忧.

老师说:天既赋予我这样的德性,桓魋能把我怎样?!

明朝<<石刻圣迹图:宋人伐木>>:孔子国途经,在大树底下与弟子们演练.国司马桓魋想害孔子.命人伐掉大树.弟子门劝孔子赶快离开. 孔子:“上天把德行赋予我,向魋能把我怎么样?”

桓魋:(tui退,字本义赤熊)国司马向魋,其为宋桓公之后,故称桓魋.孔子与弟子大树下习礼,桓魋伐其树.孔子去之.弟子曰:可以遬(同速,义窘迫也).孔子特语本章记该事.

Confucius said: Heaven bestowed virtue upon me,what could Huan Tui able to do on me?!

7.23:二三以我为隐乎?吾无隐乎尔! 吾无行而不与二三子者,是丘也.

本章明圣道无诡异之处,总在日常生活中的体悟.

老师说:诸位以为我有什么隐匿的么?我没有隐而不宣的,我有那一种行动不跟诸位在一起的呢?这样就是我啊!

: 隐匿不言;

Confucius said:Some of my student thought that I have things concealing from them.I have nothing to hide from anyone.I have done nothing not openly with them,this is Qiu.(Confucius’name)

7.24 以四教.,,,.

本章明进德修身主要四项科目.

老师以四项科目教导人:诗书礼乐,道德品行,存心忠厚,待人信实.

:诗书礼乐; :道德品行;

Confucius had 4 subjects in his curriculum: Literature;Moral philosophy,The principle of faithfulness,the policy of honesty.

7.25 :圣人吾不得而见之矣!得见君子者斯可矣! …子曰:善人吾不得而见之矣!得见有恒者斯可矣! 亡而为有,虚而为盈,约而为泰,难乎有恒矣!

本章言成德者少,有恒为入德之门.

老师说:圣人,我是看不到了.能看见君子,这也就可以了; …老师说:善人,我是看不到了,能看到有恒的人,这也就可以了,人如果把没有扮作有,将空虚扮着充实,将穷乏扮着丰盛.这样就难做到专心不贰其志了.

圣人:道无所不通,理无所不明,回出于常人者;

君子: 才德出众者; 有恒:专心不贰其志者.

Confucius said:A perfect virtuous person (A Saint),I am not able to find one.A mere virtuous person would satisfy me.

Confucius said:A perfect benevolent person, I am not able to find one,it would satisfy me should I find a person of consistency trying to accomplish it.

Nothing and yet pretending to be something,empty and yet pretending to be full,in lack of and yet pretending to have ample of,people with such characteristics are difficult to possess consistency.

7.26 钓而不纲,弋不射宿.

本章述孔子之仁.

老师钓鱼用竿不用大网,射鸟不射夜宿之鸟.

:用大索系铁钩横绝中流而渔者; :以丝缕系矢而射者; 宿:夜宿之鸟.

Confucius would only fish with hooks and not with nets.He would neither shoot a resting bird.

7.27 :盖有不知而作之者,我无是也.多闻择其善者而从之.多见而识之,知之次也.

本章孔子自述好学求知之道.无不知而妄作的.

老师说:就有不知而妄自造作的,我没有这种本领.多去听道理,选那些好的依照去实践,多去观察而默记心中,亦算是次于生而智的一等人了.

不知而作:不知其理而妄作; :努记不忘.

Confucius said:There are people who do not need to learn yet can make up knowledge of their own.I am not one of them.To hear plentiful,select good ones to follow,observe ample and bear them hard on mind, this will come next to people who are born intelligent.

…Confucius frankly admitted that} he was not born endowed with knowledge(16.9生而知之者),nor did he belong to the class of men who could transform society without knowledge.Rather he reported that he used his ears widely and followed what was good in what he had heard  and used his eyes widely and retained in his mind what he had seen. His learning constituted‘a lower level of knowledge知之次也’,a level that was presumably accessible to the majority of human beings.

7.28 互乡难与言,童子见,门人惑.:与其进也,不与其退也,唯何甚?人洁己以进,与其洁也,不保其往也.

本章记孔子有教无类.不咎既往,明教诲之道.

互乡的人,难和他们讲善之道.互乡有个童子求见.老师接见了他.弟子们甚为不解.老师说:当赞同上进,不赞同后退,为何太过份呢?人家既然洁身自好以求上进,就当赞同他上进.并非护卫他以前之失啊!

互乡:乡村名,又名合乡.一说在徐州 沛县,有说在滕县东,又说在峄县西(yi粤读亦,峄山山东); 王瑬四书地理考云(lou瑬粤读漏):古今疆界不同,,,峄三县实属一地.然更有说互乡项城县,亳州 鹿邑县(bo粤读博, 亳州地名,安徽,商汤时都城),还有说在睢州;本章之互乡,其乡风俗甚悪,难与言善; :赞同义; 洁己:修治其自身向善.

It is hard-work to chat with the people of HuXiang.(a primitive village). When a lad from Huxiang received an interview from the master, the disciples were puzzled.

Confucius said:We should encourage his progression and not to discourage him into his regression.Why be so mean?  As he had purified himself and prepared to advance, we should approve of that.We should not keep his past in mind!  

7.29 :仁远乎哉? 我欲仁,斯仁至矣!

本章言仁道出于人心.

老师说:仁道那会遥远地难求呢?只要我心存于仁,这个仁不是就到了我身中了吗?

Confucius said:Is the goal of virtue really far away? I crave for virtue, Lo and behold! Virtue is here!

7.30 陈司败:昭公知礼乎?孔子:知礼.孔子退,巫马期而进之,:吾闻君不党,君子亦党乎?君取于为同姓,谓之吴孟子,君而知礼,孰不知礼? …巫马期以告,:也幸,苟有过,人必知之.

本章谓孔子失言昭公知礼.受过不辞也.

陈司败(国司寇):昭公知礼吗? …孔子:知礼.孔子走后,陈司败作揖行礼请巫马期进来.对他说:我听讲君子人不偏私,君子人也会偏私么? 君娶了吴国的女子是同姓,叫做吴孟子,君算是知礼,那谁还不知礼呢?…巫马期告诉了老师,老师说:我很幸运,假使一有过,人一定就会知道的.

陈司败:,司败官名,即司冦; 昭公:,;

巫马期:巫马,,.孔子弟子; :偏私义; 君取为同姓:取同娶.鲁吴皆姬姓.礼约同姓不婚; 吴孟子:昭公之夫人,女当称吴姬,昭公讳之称曰孟子,人谓之吴孟子乃讥讽之辞.

Chen Sibai asked whether the Duke of Zhao knew propriety?

Confucius said: He knew propriety.

Confucius left.Chen bowed to Wumaqi to come forward and said:I have heard that a man of virtue would not gang up. Would a man of virtue be partial too? The prince (Duke of Zhao)married a Wu,a same surname as himself,and titled her Wumengzi, if the Duke of Zhao knewpropriety, who would not know propriety?

When Wumaqi told Confucius about this,The master said:How lucky am I! Should I make any mistakes even as so carelessly,people are sure to know it.

7.31 与人歌而善,必使反之.而后和之.

本章记孔子好乐,工乐取人之善也.

孔子同人一起唱歌,听人唱得好,一定请再唱一次.然后再跟着一起唱.

反之:反复之也; :相和而唱也.

When Confucius sang with a singer who could sing well,he would ask him to encore and harmonize him.

7.32:,莫吾犹人也,躬行君子,则吾未之有得.

本章记孔子自谦君子之道,不敢自居.

老师说:学文之事,我或者尚能及人,至于真能实践君子之道,那我还没有能够做到.

:疑辞; 犹人:言不能过人而尚可及人;

Confucius said:My literacy may match up with others.To carry out humbly as a man of virtue, I am yet to attain it.

7.33:若圣与仁,则吾岂敢?抑为之不厌,诲人不倦,则可谓云尔已矣! …公西华曰:正唯弟子不能学也.

本章孔子自谦之辞,圣与仁不敢自居.

老师说:假使说圣和仁,那我怎么敢当?或者我是努力不厌烦地去学,不懈怠地教导人,就这样地说说罢了! …公西华说:这正是弟子们不能学得到的.

公西华:公西,子华,.孔子弟子.束带立朝,知宾主之仪.

:或也,转接辞; 云尔:如此说;

Confucius said:If talking about Sage and Man of virtue,I dare not comparing myself with them.Maybe I am just learning with unflagging effort,teaching without weariness,perhaps you may call me as such.

Gongxi Hua said:This is just exactly what your disciples unable to learn .

7.34疾病,子路请祷.:有诸?…子路对曰:有之:诔曰:祷尔于上下神祇;…:之祷久矣!

本章孔子自知日常言行,无不合于神明,如同祷于神明,无须代祷也.

老师病重.子路请求代为祷告.老师说:有这种事么? …子路答:有的,在诔辞上说:为你向天地神只祷告; …老师说:我自己已经祷告很久了.

请祷:请代祷于鬼神也; :累列死者德行之文词;

子路:子路一字季路,,孔子弟子,孔子九岁, (孔子十哲之一:子渊,子骞,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子贡,子路,子我,子游,子夏).性鄙而好勇.事亲孝.大夫孔悝(kui悝粤),以为邑宰,出公在位,孔悝伯姬竖良夫谋立太子蒯瞶(kuai;gui瞶粤,瞶本字义眼昏如瞎,例句如聋如瞶)孔悝蒯瞶盟而劫出公.出公.子路,蒯瞶,请杀孔悝,此谓孔悝之难,子路遂被害.

Confucius was very ill.Zilu requested to ask for a prayer.

Confucius asked:Is there such a thing?

Zilu answered:There is. According to the book of Lei(the book of eulogy and dirge),quote:Pray to te gods above and below.unquote.

Confucius said:Qiu has had prayed for a long time! (connotation:a person’s behavior is a his/her prayer to Heaven)

7.35 :奢则不逊,俭则固;与其不逊也,宁固.

本章言奢与俭,皆非中庸之道.奢犹不如俭.

老师说:奢侈就不逊让,俭吝又失于固陋,与其不逊让,宁可固陋些.

:逊让; :固陋;

Confucius said: Luxury can not be modest.Thrift can be restraining. Unable to be modest as such, let it better to stay restraining.

7.36 :君子坦荡荡,小人长戚戚.

本章说君子与小人的心胸气貌之不同.

老师说:君子心胸平坦宽大,小人心胸常常忧惧不安.

坦荡荡:心胸坦然宽大; 长戚戚:心中常忧惧不安.

Confucius said:A person of virtue is frank and magnanimous.A mean person is always worried and mournful.

7.37 温而厉,威而不猛,恭而安.

本章述孔子容态中和.

老师的容态温和中带有严肃之气,有威仪而不凶猛,恭敬之中甚为安详.

:严肃也; :凶猛也;

Confucius was gentle but stern.He was mighty but not fierce, he was reverent and peaceful.
